Emelie Nelson, 2022-23

I was inspired to get involved after attending Dr. Bree's lecture to the UTHealth Dermatology Interest Group on pediatric dermatology. I left the lecture, knowing in my heart, that I wanted to get involved with Made A Masterpiece. Hearing about the social and emotional impact of skin conditions profoundly resonated with me, and having grown up with my own skin struggles, I already had some awareness of these challenges. Volunteering at Camp Dermadillo later that year only reinforced my passion. I was amazed by all of the children, their wisdom and maturity far beyond their years. It was at that moment that I knew I wanted to pursue the Masterpiece fellowship and continue to give back in any way that I could.
One of the biggest challenges I faced during my fellowship was figuring out how to be the most impactful. Finding that balance—where my skills aligned with the greatest needs—was a learning process, but ultimately, it helped me grow both personally and professionally. Some of my most memorable and rewarding experiences as a Masterpiece Fellow came from working directly with the kids—whether it was celebrating Christmas in July, spending time at Camp Dermadillo, or later at Camp Discovery. Witnessing the unfiltered joy of the kids was profoundly meaningful. During these special moments, our kiddos weren’t thinking about their skin conditions or how they were perceived by others—they were simply kids being kids, laughing, playing, and fully embracing the moment.
If I can offer any advice to a child living with a skin condition, it would be to always be kind to yourself—whether that means speaking to yourself with love, doing things that bring you joy, or giving yourself grace on the tough days. Remember, your worth isn’t defined by any skin condition or any challenge that you may face. You are strong, resilient, and have so much to offer the world.
I’d encourage these kids to find something they love or are passionate about, and go for it! When you truly enjoy what you do, it won’t feel like work—it will feel like your purpose. Making a difference starts with using your unique skills and interests to help others. Stay curious, be open to learning, and don’t be afraid to take small steps toward big change. Even small actions can have a huge impact!
