I started volunteering with Made A Masterpiece because I wanted to be part of something greater than myself. Having personally experienced the challenges that skin conditions can bring, I understand their profound impact. I believe that sharing our stories and supporting one another fosters strong connections and builds stronger, more supportive communities. Becoming a Masterpiece Fellow felt like the perfect opportunity to contribute to this important work.
During my fellowship year, the onset of COVID brought about numerous challenges, heartache for many reasons, and adjustments. However, I held onto the positive impact we made throughout the year with our educational programs, which reminded me of the strength of our efforts.
The most memorable part of my fellowship year was leading educational programs at various schools with Lindsay, who was the Director of Community Engagement, where we engaged students in conversations about skin and the unique qualities that make each of us beautiful. Connecting with the kids through these sessions was incredibly rewarding. The community we fostered was truly incredible—I often reflect on those experiences and carry their lessons with me.
The message I think is most important for children with skin conditions is that your skin condition does not define who you are. While some days may feel more challenging than others, it's important to remember that there are brighter days ahead. Embrace your progress and celebrate the positive moments along your journey.
I’d also encourage all kids to pick a cause they love and for which they feel genuine passion. No cause is too small or too big, and there is no better time to start than now!
